Estd. in 1987
Shirlai was always far from Agashi church. It was inconvenient for people to attend church on Sundays and follow it with the weeks market. By the time they reached back home it used to be high noon. A church of there own close to home was on every Shirlaikars wish list.
Fr. Sebastian Vaz a regular on the road between Agashi and Nandhakal had already identified the unused public spot in Shirlai, which could be made in a church. Once during a redemtrist mission the idea of a small church at Shirlai was sparked and soon it became a only purpose for Fr. Jo Parera.
He started conducting mass on the open ground at Shirlai. Soon activities followed and the wasted land belonging to the D’silva family was converted into a ready plain for the church. People started contributing towards this noble cause and the foundation for this church was laid.
The church was decided to be dedicated to the Lourdes Mother and renowned architect Mr. Jo Dias from Bandra prepared the designs. Mr. Mates Tuscano of Nandhakal was appointed as contractor to build this beautiful church.
The funds about Rs. 22 lakhs were donated by natives and finally the church came into being. On 8th Feb. 1987 the day of the festival of Lourdes Mother, the then Arch Bishop of Mumbai Simon Pimenta inaugurated the church.
Even after the church started functioning it was not complete without the church bell. Shri Anton Lopiz a wood contractor from north Vasai took up this task. He brought a huge bell from Calcutta and installed it in the tower all at his own expenses.
The Lourdes Mother church at Shirlai is a true example of the peoples co-operation and movement for a united cause.
